Strategic Analysis of Coastal Businesses on Qeshm Island with a Focus on the Shrimp Aquaculture Sector

Abstract

Coastal areas provide unique opportunities for economic development due to their abundant marine resources and easy access to international transportation routes. Qeshm Island, as the largest Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, holds significant potential for investment and development of coastal businesses. Shrimp farming is one of the key industries on the island, attracting attention for its high demand in domestic and international markets, profitability, and adaptability to the regional climate. This research strategically evaluates the shrimp farming industry on Qeshm Island using SWOT analysis. Due to access limitations, purposive sampling was used to select 35 experienced participants with over five years of relevant activity. Data analysis estimated internal factors (IFE) at 0.106 and external factors (EFE) at -0.373. SO strategies focus on developing export markets with emphasis on organic shrimp and local branding, and adopting modern technologies for online sales. WO strategies propose strengthening transportation and storage infrastructure to address logistical challenges and developing standardized pricing systems. ST strategies emphasize training skilled labor and utilizing government facilities for industry growth. WT strategies include enhancing government support to manage market fluctuations and diversifying production and marketing to compete with imported shrimp. These strategies provide a solid foundation for the sustainable development and advancement of the shrimp farming business.Strategies to improve the current status of the shrimp farming business are considered in SO strategies, developing export markets with a focus on organic shrimp and local branding, and using modern technologies for online sales.
In the WO sector, strengthening transportation and storage infrastructure to address logistical problems and developing standardized pricing systems are proposed. ST strategies emphasize training a skilled workforce and utilizing government facilities for industrial development. Finally, WT strategies include strengthening government support to cope with market fluctuations and diversifying production and marketing to compete with imported shrimp. These strategies provide a suitable platform for the development and sustainability of the shrimp farming business.
